Commercial estates are never greenfield. Whatever you install joins equipment specified by somebody else, under a different budget, sometimes decades earlier. The system that survives is the one that assumed it would inherit rather than replace, and the integration seam is where the cost consistently lands.
What constrains the engineering here
You inherit the estate
Mixed vendors, mixed generations, and documentation that stopped being accurate two refits ago. Discovery is real work and pretending otherwise is how projects overrun.
Refit windows are short
Work happens overnight, at weekends, or in phases around an operating building. A system that needs a long commissioning period may be undeployable regardless of technical merit.
Operators are not engineers
If the control room cannot use it without training that nobody has scheduled, it will be worked around. That is a design constraint, not a user problem.
Procurement writes conformance in
Estate buyers increasingly specify standards conformance rather than assuming it, which shifts risk onto whoever supplied the device.
Where our scope ends
We do not install, and we are not a security systems integrator. We work alongside the integrator on the engineering they do not have in-house, usually at the point where a device and a platform will not agree.
